acgcThe ACGC football team faced an uphill task Friday night as they battled the defending Class 1A State Champion Van Meter Bulldogs. The Bulldogs showed they will be contending for another state title as they rolled over the Chargers 63-6.

After failing to convert on their opening possession, the Bulldogs scored on their next drive with a 25 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Anthony Potthoff to senior Zach Drummond. They never looked back as they added eight more touchdowns. Potthoff threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another to lead the Bulldog offense. Junior running back Ian Abrahamson also had two rushing touchdowns for Radio Iowa’s top ranked team in Class 1A.

Despite the blowout, there were a couple bright spots for the gold and black. Junior quarterback Bryce Littler connected for his first touchdown pass of the season to classmate Kolby Jacobe on a 30 yard pass late in the first half. Charger head coach Cody Matthewson says Jacobe played a complete game despite the scoreboard disparity.

That was one kid out there who just, from whistle to whistle, first quarter to fourth quarter never gave up. He was, at times, looked like the only guy who was fighting out there. Hats off to him. Not only did he run the ball really well on our kick returns and had a great grab for a touchdown there, he was blocking his butt off and he was still trying to make plays even when the scoreboard wasn’t reflected (on) the things we like and wasn’t in our favor.”

Senior running back Ben Kingery also broke his own record for most rushing yards in a single season. His 63 yards put him at 463 on the season, breaking last year’s mark of 448. ACGC will look to regroup as they head to Clarinda next week. To hear more postgame comments from Matthewson, listen to Monday’s Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Center Guthrie County PM Sports Page.
