Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s Greene County High School volleyball team improved to 1-3 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play and 4-12 overall with a three set sweep of Saydel (Des Moines) on Thursday night in Jefferson. The Rams won 25-15, 25-15, 25-12.

Set one was tied 7-7 before the Rams took command. Set two saw Greene County trail 5-8 before putting together a run of seven points in a row, which gave the home team a lead they would not give up. The third set was controlled by the Rams.

Brazilian foreign exchange student Luisa Slompo led the Rams in kills with nine and Lily Muir was next with seven. Sophie Havens had five kills. Muir recorded 10 digs with seven by Brianna Osterson and Paige Heaning with five. Senior Captain Kara Reed dug the ball four times.

“It was refreshing to finally get a win! At all three levels. Varsity showed strength in their hitting tonight, along with much better passing than in recent matches. I saw our girls staying aggressive throughout the entire match, even after mistakes. We’ve been trying to focus on staying aggressive, instead of backing down after errors and sending over easy balls. Mental toughness is the ongoing topic, so it was a great night to see them fight through sluggish moments or missed serves to come back and respond with strong plays,” Coach Heisterkamp commented.

The Rams are in the Roland-Story Tournament in Story City on Monday before traveling to Monroe Tuesday to face PCM.
