rock the block

Next week, Dallas County Habitat for Humanity will once again be bringing their “Rock the Block” neighborhood revitalization project to Perry, and they’re still looking for volunteers.

Dallas County Habitat Coordinator Omar Padilla says the dates for the Perry event will be Thursday, September 27th through Saturday, September 29th. During that time frame, volunteers will work on improvements to four houses around Perry, which Padilla says often encourages those nearby to do the same. “Our idea was to call it ‘Rock the Block,’ because we really believe that when we select one targeted area of a town, that we can more visibly create positive change and that there also is a multiplier effect. When we are in one block, and we are improving one house, the neighbors see that. And they are encouraged, maybe a little pressured, into doing improvements to their own home. And so we see that everywhere, and that’s where the name ‘Rock the Block’ came from.”

Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. each morning at Wiese Park, where they will be welcomed with some light breakfast. After a prayer, everyone will head to the project houses to start working. Lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. back at the park, and following that volunteers will get back to work until 3:30. Padilla says it’s always a fun day for everyone, and more importantly they’re helping families in need.
