acgcThe ACGC volleyball team returned to the court in Guthrie Center Saturday for their annual home tournament . The Chargers, who were defending their title, came up just short of repeating as champions, finishing as the tournament runner-ups.

The Chargers got off to a tough start, dropping a straight-sets loss to the Underwood Eagles 20-22, 12-21. The gold and black were headed down the same path against Coon Rapids-Bayard after dropping the first set of that match 28-30, but regained their composure and put together some key points to win the next two sets, 21-12 and 20-18. They wrapped up pool play with a three set victory over Glidden Ralston 21-9, 20-22, 15-5.

In the semifinals, the Chargers drew a rematch with Audubon. ACGC dropped a match to Audubon earlier this year in their triangular with Woodward Granger. The Chargers got redemption in their most convincing win of the day, sweeping the Wheelers 21-9 and 21-15. ACGC faced Underwood once again in the final, but the Eagles would get the best of the Chargers again, defeating the gold and black in straight sets, 21-14 and 21-18.

Eight schools participated, two more than the six teams in the 2017 field. Senior Jadeyn Carrick, junior Olivia Laabs, and freshman Chloe Largent were all selected to the all-tournament team. The Chargers improve to 13-5 overall and will head to Urbandale on Tuesday for a crucial conference matchup with the Des Moines Christian Lions.
