DSCN9200Law enforcement officials have released the name of the driver who was killed in a near head-on crash in Greene County Wednesday.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, around 12:04pm, 71-year-old Wesley Bunnell of Glidden was traveling north on Highway 4 when, for an unknown reason, his 2017 Chevrolet Express Van crossed the centerline and hit the driver’s side of a 2010 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer driven by 21-year-old Arthur Vanderwall of Hull, who had just turned south onto the highway from County Road E-57. According to the report, Vanderwall saw Bunnell’s van drift over into his lane and tried to avoid being hit by swerving into the west shoulder. Both vehicles came to a rest in the southbound lane.

Bunnell was pronounced dead at the scene and Vanderwall was uninjured. Both vehicles were totaled. According to the crash report, Bunnell was wearing his seat belt at the time of the incident. Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams noted that the semi-tractor trailer was hauling 27 hogs and all were alive following the crash. The cause of the wreck remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. The highway was closed while crews were on scene and the road was back open shortly before 4:30pm.

The Greene County Sheriff’s office, Greene County Emergency Medical Services and Jefferson Fire Department assisted at the scene.
