Perry wrestling coach Mark Weber knows about the importance of health and nutrition along with a consistent workout regime. Afterall, he excelled in the sport of wrestling at both the high school and college level. Last year, he guided two Perry wrestlers into state championship matches. He feels sometimes athletes take the health and nutrition part more seriously than the training that is equally important.
“Not only should you be working out for the sake of the sport that you want to play but more importantly, when we teach health and nutrition classes, all the books and text always say work out regularly. It doesn’t say workout three months and sit back nine months, or work out six months and lay back the other six. At Perry, we want to stress that kids are working out all 12 months and being consistent about it. Now this doesn’t mean your intensity has to be through the roof all 12 months and maybe this is where the confusion lies. It does say you have to be consistent all 12 months to get stronger and more athletic for the sports you want to play or you run the risk of falling behind.”
Perry football coach Matt Hardy reported strong numbers at the start of weight training in the late spring before falling off in the summer and flaring back up recently.
