There were several highlights from this year’s Greene County Fair.

One of the main highlights was at the end of the fair during the Junior Fair Premium Auction Monday. Greene County Fair Board Secretary Doug Hawn tells Raccoon Valley Radio that a little over $24,000 was raised for all of the youth. Greene County Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Kayla Willms describes her excitement following the auction.

“Yesterday we had a great full room and it was amazing to see all of the support and all of those kids that came to the premium auction. We have five large projects going to the (Iowa) State Fair in static, which is the most we’ve had in the size department for a long time. So it’s super exciting to see the kids stepping out of their comfort zone. We’re excited to show them off at State Fair.”State Fair Selections pic 3

She adds that the Greene County Corn Growers Association is contributing an extra $5 to every youth’s total from the premium auction as well. Another highlight was the crowning of this year’s Greene County Fair Queen which was Gina Brown. Even though she says she was surprised, she is excited to represent Greene County at the Iowa State Fair in August.

“I’m so excited to be able to do it. I mean I love our community. And I love being a leader and I love being looked up to by people. And I feel like even walking around even around the county fair, a lot of people have looked at me obviously because I have the sash and tiara on. So I’m really excited to go to the State Fair and just show people what our little town and the surrounding towns have to offer.”

There were 29 4-H static exhibits that also qualified for the State Fair, along with three additional communication exhibits. Bob Berns was also selected to be this year’s Greene County 4-H Hall of Fame inductee. Plus, the family of Dave and Becky Wolf will receive “The Way We Live” Award at the Iowa State Fair. They are a third generation grain and livestock farming family since 1981 from Scranton.
