Glenwood scored early and often en route to a 17-6 Class 3A District 16 high school baseball opening round victory over Greene County late Friday afternoon in Winterset. The Glenwood Rams scored six runs in the top of the first and put the game away by adding 11 runs in the third. Greene County’s Rams scored twice in the first and four times in the third, and the game was halted by the 10 run rule after five innings. The previous high for runs allowed in a game this season by Greene County was 11, and the loss by the 10 run rule was the first of the season. Glenwood won for the eleventh time against 19 losses.

The line score for the winning team read 17 run on 13 hits, one error, and eight runners left on base. Greene County had six runs, on 11 hits, four errors, and eight left on base.

Senior Wade Adcock had the only extra base hit for Greene County. He doubled to start the bottom of the first, then singled twice, drove in a run, and reached on an error. Senior Jordan Patterson had two singles and one RBI, while seniors Ben Wilkins and Tom Gannon also had base hits, as did juniors Austin Delp and Bryce Hoyle, along with sophomores Brent Riley and Carter Morton. Wilkins, Gannon, Riley, and Morton each drove in one run.

Senior Ben Wilkins started on the mound and took the loss. He entered the night with a 1.24 earned run average, but was uncharacteristically wild. Wilkins hit four batters with pitches and walked three in 2-1/3 innings. Not all 12 runs scored by Glenwood were earned, as three of Greene County’s errors were committed when he was on the mound. Delp pitched one-third of an inning and allowed five earned runs, and Brent Riley threw the final 2-1/3 innings, allowing no runs and no hits, with one walk, and four strikeouts.

Coach John Hupp’s team finished 14-12, one year after then-coach Mark Sawhill’s Rams went 14-13. The back-to-back winning seasons were the first for the program in a decade.
