Heat-wave1With temperatures reaching to the mid-90s and possibly into the triple digit heat indexes this weekend, it’s important to go over some tips to avoid the heat.

Greene County Public Health Director Becky Wolf describes some ways that people can help cool down their bodies when there’s extremely high temperatures.

“Don’t over exert yourself when you’re outside in those high temperatures. Make sure that you’re drinking plenty of water. Make sure that you’re taking plenty of rest and getting inside for a while to cool off or at least in front of a fan.”

Wolf also recommends to be aware of individuals who are more susceptible to extreme heat such as newborns and infants. She talks about also checking on the elderly.

“Because they may have chronic health problems that put them at higher problems with heat. But they also may not sweat like we do, or they may not perceive the high temperatures like we do.”

Wolf adds that, unless you are very active outdoors when it is extremely hot, drinking sports drinks with electrolytes is okay but water is the best source of fluid to keep hydrated.
