Jefferson Fire DepartmentThe Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department is looking for a few more members.

Fire Chief Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio the fire department needs ten more people to be at full strength with 30 members. He talks about some of the training a new member will need to initially undergo.

“In the first year you have to complete Firefighter One, which is about an 80-hour course that we teach at the firestation, we have three instructors. We usually do that through the winter months when it’s too cold to go outside and train. Most of the time we’re using water and it freezes pretty quick. But it’s 80-hours and you get hazmat operations and Firefighter One, which allows you to do building fires.”

Williams adds that the fire department meets every Wednesday either training or just a regular meeting. There are also a couple of fundraisers that firefighters are expected to help with every year. Williams points out they will not accept applications from individuals who are not at least 21-years-old or who have domestic, felony or aggravated misdemeanor convictions on their record.

Call the law enforcement center at 386-2136 and leave a message for Williams if interested in joining the Jefferson Fire Department.
