Day one of the 2018 Coed State Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines has been completed for Raccoon Valley Radio listening area athletes in Class 1A.

The Class 1A girls’ shuttle hurdle relay preliminaries saw two area teams qualify for Saturday’s finals. There are 24 teams in each event and the fastest eight qualify for the finals. Nodaway Valley won Heat 2 in 1:09.10 with Annie Herr, Natalie Yonker, Sadie Marnin, and Lexi Shike. That quartet qualified for the finals at 11:50 a.m. on Saturday with the second fastest time, behind only 2017 champion Sigourney’s time of 1:07.03 .

Earlham also ran the shuttle hurdle relay and claimed the eighth and final spot on Saturday. The Cardinals were second in their heat in 1:10.93 with Rachel Smith, Emma Jensen, Kaitlyn Knight, and Jocelyn Turnbull.

A pair of Nodaway Valley boys were in the 3200 meter run. Brycen Wallace placed second in 9:30.57. Skyler Rawlings was thirteenth in 10:21.87.

Earlham picked up three points with a sixth place finish in the girls’ 4 x 800 relay. The quartet of Katie Noah, Kirsten Boyle, Molli Davis, and Rachel Luke ran 10:17.27. That’s three freshmen and Luke, a junior.

The Earlham boys’ 4 x 800 meter relay placed even higher with the foursome of Jake Willem, Caleb Swalla, Alex Firch, and Alex Caskey. They were third in 8:16.38.

Brady Hilpipre of Nodaway Valley was in the 1A boys’ long jump. He was fourteenth with a best leap of 19′ 7-1/4″.

Jade Hays of Coon Rapids-Bayard ran the prelims of the girls 200 meter dash in 27.22 seconds and was seventh in her heat and did not make the eight person field for Saturday’s final. She finished in nineteenth place.

Earlham’s Jacob Ridgely was in the prelims of the boys 200 meter dash. He was timed in 23.95 seconds, placed sixth in his heat and did not make the finals, finishing in seventeenth place. Ridgely also ran the 100 meters prelims and was fifth in his heat in 11.80 seconds and did not make Saturday’s final, finishing in 20th place.
