New Perry City Council

The Perry City Council convened Monday evening in regular session.

The majority of the meeting was spent discussing amendments to the City’s fireworks ordinance. Police Chief Eric Vaughn and members of the Public Safety Committee outlined proposed changes to last year’s ordinance, which was passed expediently following the state legislature’s legalization of fireworks. After much discussion, the Council approved the first reading of amendments to the ordinance, which include lowering the fine from $500 to $250 and expanding the time to allow usage to July 1-4. They will hold the second and third readings at later meetings, after a motion to suspend the rules of readings failed.

The Council also held two public hearings, one regarding budget amendments for fiscal year 2017-18, and the other for an alleyway vacation to Wiese Industries. No one spoke against either resolution, so following the hearings both were passed. Other items approved included: reappointments of three individuals to City boards; change orders and pay requests for the soccer complex and McCreary Center roof projects, as well as final acceptance and certificate of completion for the roof; quotes for phase two of the McCreary roof project; and establishing rates and fees for commercial cardboard collection.
