Day two of the high school coed State track & field championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines saw more than 15,000 fans watch some outstanding competition on Friday. The Raccoon Valley Radio listening area added to its place winner list and now has 19 different events scoring points for their respective teams.

Lydia Knapp of Panorama and Madison McDermott of ACGC were in the 2A girls discus field and both are State place winners. Knapp placed fourth  at 130′ 2″ and McDermott was seventh with a best toss of 121′ 9″.

John Locks of Woodward Academy was eighth in the boys 2A discus at 151′ 4″. Panorama’s Daniel Jensen was tenth in 149′ 9″.

The high jump for 2A boys had two from our area in it. Carter Morton of Greene County and Gracen Welberg of Panorama both jumped and neither placed in the top eight. Morton cleared 6′ 1″ and tied for eleventh. There were eight others like Morton, that went out at 6′ 3.” Welberg cleared 5′ 11″ and tied for fifteenth place. Miles Rupiper of Kuemper Catholic swept the two jumping events, winning both the long jump and high jump.

Megan Durbin of Greene County and Morgan Johnk of Panorama both went 5′ 5″ in the 2A girls’ high jump, as did  Albia’s Hannah Isley. Durbin was second, Isley third, and Johnk fourth, based on misses. Cori DeJong of Western Christian (Hull) cleared  5′ 7″ for the win. Jenna Merical of West Central Valley cleared 4′ 11″ and tied for 18th.

The 2A girls’ distance medley relay had both Panorama and ACGC in the third section.  The Panthers finished in fifth place in that section and fifth overall in 4:17.83 with Devyn Kemble, Kassidy Bremer, Bailey Beckman, and Gwen Steffen. ACGC did not run the event as strong as they could have, and was eighth in the heat in 4:26.78 and in twentieth place with Mady Smith, Savana Fuller, Audrey Stowe, and Kate Crawford. The ADM girls were in section one in Class 3A. The Tigers were second in the section in 4:16.81 and placed twelfth overall.

ADM hurdler Luke Heitz will advance to tomorrow’s final in the 110 meter high hurdles as the fifth fastest qualifier. Heinz ran 15.12 in the preliminaries and was second in his heat.

Morgan Johnk had the fastest qualifying time going into State in 2A and she won her preliminary heat in 15.57 seconds. That qualifies Johnk for the final on Saturday and only one other competitor had a faster qualifying time today.

Sami Schepers, the ADM senior, was in the 3A hurdles prelims and was fourth in her heat in :16.16, and was thirteenth overall.

The Woodward Academy Knights appeared to be on the scoreboard with a third place finish in the 2A 4 x 200 in 1:30.71 with Emmuael Totaye, D’Angelo Damphier, LaShaud Dowell, and Royzell Henderson. However, they were disqualified, and will not receive the team points or medals.

In the girls’ 2A 4 x 200, Greene County and ACGC were both in section one of the three section timed final. The Rams were second in the section in 1:49.70 with Melanie Doran, Makala Kafer, Brianna Osterson, and Megan Durbin and placed fifteenth. ACGC ran Reagan Rumelhart, Olivia Laabs, Mady Smith, and Savana Fuller and was last in the section in 1:54.47 and twenty second overall.

The 400 meter hurdles is a final event. Morton of Greene County ran 57.04 seconds and was twelfth. Billy Larsen of West Central Valley was timed in :57.36 and thirteenth. ADM’s Luke Heitz turned in a 55.74 performance in section two of Class 3A and was ninth.

Anna Kenny of ADM was in the their and final section of the 3A girls 400 meter hurdles. She was eighth in the section in 1:07.85 and unofficially was fourteenth.

The boys’ distance medley was run as a three section timed final. ACGC was eighth in its 2A section and number 12 overall in 3:43.17 with Dylan Soper, Justin Plowman, Caden Warden, and Clay Billmeier.

Perry and ADM were in the 3A boys distance medley. The Blue Jays entered the meet seeded 18th and just missed placing, finishing ninth while running in section one. Perry had Kato Dougan, Reece Dunlap, Kaleb Olejniczak, and Brandon Kenyon and they ran 3:36.33. ADM ran 3:40.91 and was sixteenth with Luke Heitz, Colton Pirtle, Trey Volz, and Rylan Heffernan.

The girls’ 2A 4 x 100 meter relay had Panorama in it and the Panthers ran :51.82 and did not make the final. They were fifteenth with Carson Fisher, Johnk, Bailey Beckman, and Kassidy Bremer. In 3A, ADM was eighth in its heat and 23rd overall in :52.40 with Lizzy Lohmann, Sami Schepers, Carely Osgood, and Anna Kenny.

Woodward Academy made the final of the 4 x 100 in 2A for boys with Emmanuel Totaye, D’Angelo Dampier, LaShaud Dowell, and Royzell Henderson in :43.93 as the fifth fastest qualifier. Winterset was second in its 3A boys 4 x 100 prelim heat in 44.24 with Kaden Shaw, Hunter Pashek, Carter Tryon, and Jacob Dick but the Huskies just missed the top eight, finishing in ninth place.

The final event Friday was the 4 x 400 meter relay preliminary. Panorama’s girls in 2A were second in their heat in 4:07.34 and qualified for the finals with the fifth fastest time with Gwen Steffen, Bailey Beckman, Lydia Lindstrom, and Devyn Kemble. Greene County was eighth in the same heat in 4:18.28 with Brianna Osterson, Melanie Doran, Lilly Muir and Durbin and 23rd overall. Woodward-Granger was in the second heat with Emma Drake, Anna Tague, Kayley Dresback, and Ava Petersen. The Hawks ran 4:13.43 and were fourteenth.

The boys’ prelims of the 4 x 400. had three area teams and none made the final. Woodward-Granger and West Central Valley had 2A teams and Perry was in 3A. The Hawks ran Bryce Achenbach, Ian Thompson, Josh Saak, and Chandler Cavanaugh and were seventh in their heat in 3:34.20, just behind the Wildcats, and W-G was twenty-first. WCV went with Brice Sechrist, Billy Larsen, Carson Waddle, and Cole Arnburg and ran 3:34.13 to finish twentieth. Neither made the final. Perry had Kaleb Olejniczak, Zachary Thompson, Reece Dunlap, and Brandon Kenyon. The Blue Jays were third in their heat in 3:26.37 and again, Perry just missed the top eight, finishing in ninth place.
