acgcThe summer sports season kicks off today for ACGC softball and baseball as both Charger squads open in Audubon.

The Charger softball team begins its second season with the entire team back from year one. The squad lost no seniors to graduation last year, which could give them the experience necessary to improve on an 11-19 opening campaign. Last season a quartet of juniors led the team in hits, notching 126 of the team’s 255 total hits.

Leading the way individually was junior Sierra O’Brien. In her sophomore season, O’Brien tallied 33 hits and also led the team in RBIs with 21. Her father Tim, the Chargers’ head coach, tells Raccoon Valley Radio he is pleased with the team’s practices and thinks it could be a good season at ACGC.

The Chargers will face an Audubon squad coming off a 4-25 season in addition to losing their top two hitters to graduation. Junior Gracye Albertson, who racked up a win against the Chargers last year in the Audubon tournament, will return to the circle this season. In the 9-8 win she allowed seven earned runs on 13 hits, while striking out two.

Opening pitches for both softball and baseball fly at 7pm from Audubon. You can hear the softball game live on KKRF2, with pre-game coverage starting at 6:45. You can also hear Tim O’Brien on tonight’s Guthrie County PM Sports Page, starting at 6.
