Greene County was an 11-2 high school boys’ soccer winner in Denison on Monday vs. Unity Christian (Orange City) in the quarterfinals of Class 1A Substate 1. The win advances Coach Carl Behne’s team to Wednesday’s semifinals and the team reached at least one of it’s preseason goals by clinching a winning season. The 10-8 Rams will meet 12-7 Kuemper Catholic next in Denison at 5 p.m. tomorrow (Wed.). The Knights of UC end their season at 2-12.

The Rams put pressure on UC from the opening minute. The first goal was scored by Junior Gutierrez with 34:34. left in the opening half. Gutierrez scored four goals with Leo Marques putting the ball between the posts three times. Cael Fisher had a pair of goals with one by Luis Velazco. The Knights knocked the ball in their own goal once. Marques is the number two goal scorer in Iowa high school boys’ soccer with 35 and Gutierrez is in the top 20 with 18 goals. Austin Delp, Luis Tuesta and Marques each had one assist.

The Rams led 4-1 at intermission scored five times in the first 16 minutes of half number two to put the match away. Coach Behne said he was pleased with the start the Rams had “We came out and put pressure on them and kept it on throughout the match. We had a little bump here and there, but overall we played very well.”

The Greene County vs. Kuemper Catholic match was moved from its original Orange City site to Denison at 5 p.m. tomorrow. Kuemper was a winner by a 1-0 score over the Rams in a regular season match in Carroll on April 20. Tomorrow’s winner faces either Gilbert or Sioux Center on Saturday for the Substate title and a trip to the State Tournament.
