A public fundraising campaign recently kicked off to build a new animal shelter in Greene County.

Facilitator Don Orris says he and the steering committee are looking to raise over $1.1 million to build a new animal shelter in Jefferson at the Greene County Development Corporation’s west business park. Orris points out he’s already hit the ground running.

“I already do have an anonymous donor for $100,000. So that’s a big plus. But we’re going to need all the help we can get to get to that $1 million figure. We’re looking for large and small donors. I’ll be making visits to different businesses and so forth in the very near future.”

Orris adds that no taxpayer money will be used to build the facility. Once the facility is operational, the City of Jefferson will own it and contribute about $36,000 annually toward the budget, while the County Board of Supervisors have already agreed to pay $15,000. Orris notes that the other cities in the county will also contribute toward the annual expenses.

“They will have a choice as to whether they want to go by per animal when they bring an animal to it, or a 28E agreement to bring all animals (as a flat rate). They will have that choice.”
