3-14 House Fire

An early Wednesday morning fire in Perry resulted in a 100-year-old house suffering significant damage, and also caused minor injuries to two firefighters.

According to Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds, at 1:34 a.m. emergency crews were requested at the house located at 1324 Willis Avenue, across from the Perry Fareway. When Perry and Dawson firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the second story windows on the side facing the street. At that point, all residents of the home owned by Mike and Hildie Stokley were accounted for and unharmed. Fire crews fought the fire from the outside and inside to keep it under control. Hinds said one firefighter suffered minor burns and another strained a muscle during the ordeal, but both are doing fine.

Crews managed to extinguish the fire after several hours, but not before the second floor and attic were completely destroyed. Initial reports indicated the fire started in a bedroom on the second floor. Hinds said the exact cause is under investigation, though it doesn’t appear to be suspicious in nature. The Perry Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputies, Perry First Responders, and Dallas County Emergency Medical Services all assisted at the scene.
