Paton-Churdan High School senior Jake Berns has been named to the 24-person Academic All-State Team for boys’ basketball by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. There were more than 130 applicants for the team, and those chosen had a composite ACT score of 29.5, a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.95, and a per game scoring average of 15.2 points.

Berns averaged 18.8 points per game for the 7-14 Rockets. He also hauled down an average of 8.4 rebounds per game. He is the son of Brian and Lori Berns.

The IBCA Academic All-State team had representation from all four of Iowa’s boys’ basketball classes. Paton-Churdan is among the state’s smallest enrollment public school’s.

Greene County High School junior Trey Hinote has been named to the Class 2A Substate 8 boys’ basketball team, also from the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. Hinote is a first team all-conference selection in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. He averaged 16.9 points per game for the 12-11 Rams, and made a school record 71 three-point shots, while making 38.6% of his shots from beyond the arc, and 42.9% overall.
