The Iowa Money Smart Kid Essay Contest submission deadline has been extended to Friday, March 23rd. In addition to the extra time, there are additional awards. Originally, there was only one $1,000 award. However, now the top ten essays will be recognized. The four non-winning finalists will each receive $500 and five runner-up selections will receive $300 each.

To be eligible for the contest, students must be in 7th-11th grade and write a newspaper article style essay describing the potential devastating effects of a natural disaster on a family’s financial situation. The essay should be 400-words or fewer and should only focus on one type of natural disaster. The essay should also include tips and resources for readers to help prepare them for a potential unexpected crisis.
