Media Day for track & field at Greene County High School was held on Thursday. Girls’ head coach Derek Merk has over 20 on the team, and boys’ head coach Chad Morton has over 30 on his team.

Both Greene County teams took partial squads to Cedar Falls earlier this week for the Dickinson Relays, which are separate girls and boys unscored meets with athletes from all parts of the state and all sizes of schools.

Coach Merk talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about his start here, after the Boone native coached boys’ track & field at Central Lee in extreme Southeast Iowa. “I’ve had a very warm welcome. The coaching staff that stayed on and the other new members of the coaching staff have been really great. I think we get along pretty well. As far as the athletes go, they’ve been great so far and have been working hard. I think I’m coming into a pretty great program, so the former coaches should be given credit for creating the program that we have here.”

Kelly Simpson was the head girls’ coach and Dean Lansman the head boys’ coach in 2017. Both were teachers and coaches and both left the school district after last season.
