Wade Adcock, Laurin Lyons, and Ben Wilkins, all Greene County High School seniors, signed Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers with schools within the state. After a ceremony in the high school theater, the trio talked with Raccoon Valley Radio.

Wilkins signed to play baseball for Wartburg College in Waverly. A right handed pitcher, he talked about his choice and some of the pitches he’s most confident in. “It just felt right for me. Good coach, good program. My two seam (fastball) has always worked for me, never let me down. I just added a splitter (fastball) for a change up, and it’s working real well.”

Adcock signed to play basketball at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. The Beavers recently saw long time head coach Jim Van Haaften leave the school to become head coach at Dordt College in Sioux Center. Despite that, Adcock chose BVU. “Scott Weber (volunteer coach and BVU alum) influenced me. I was thinking of going to Iowa Central first, but I really wanted to build a relationship over four years instead of the two-year route where I’d build a relationship for two years, then have to build another relationship two years later at another school.”

Lyons signed to play basketball in Marshalltown at Marshalltown Community College. She named the distance from her Grand Junction home and the opportunity to play sooner rather than later were factors. “It’s about an hour away from home, and they only have about 12 girls on the roster, so you’re guaranteed playing time. I like the idea of playing right away instead of going to a different school, a bigger school, and where you may not be able to play until your sophomore, junior, or senior year.”

Marshalltown plays in the Iowa Community College Conference, while BVU and Wartburg are both Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members.
