Flower Shop Fire

An early Wednesday morning fire in downtown Perry was quickly extinguished by the Perry Fire Department.

According to Fire Chief Chris Hinds, a call came into the Perry Police Department at just after 2 a.m. The caller reported smoke behind the building that holds both Bacon Jewelers and Perry Floral. When officers arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the roof of Perry Floral. The fire was discovered in the concrete block addition to the rear of the original building. Fire crews fought the fire through a steel door on the west side of the building. Hinds said the fire was located in the southeast corner of the addition against a brick wall.

Once the fire was extinguished, investigation revealed there were shelving units used by the floral shop that contained mineral spirits, varnish, and floor sealer. While this was determined to be where the fire originated, Hinds said there was no apparent source of ignition present. The fire remains under investigation at this time. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting the blaze. One sustained bruised ribs after a fall on the scene, and the other cut their finger on a hose fitting and required three stitches.

The Perry, Dawson, and Woodward fire departments, the Perry Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputies, and Dallas County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it’s made official.
