Dallas Vote

The filing deadline has passed, and the candidates are set for the federal and state primary elections. That means Dallas County voters now have the responsibility to learn as much as they can about the nominees before June 5th.

The primary ballot won’t include a few familiar faces, as State Representatives Ralph Watts from District 19 and Clel Baudler from District 20 have both announced their retirement from the Legislature. Candidates vying for District 19 include republican Chris Hagenow and democrat Gregg Gustafson. District 20 features three candidates, including republicans Dodge Michael Perrigo and Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, and democrat Warren Varley. Other races of note include: U.S. Representative, District 3, where four democrats and one libertarian are seeking to unseat incumbent republican Congressman David Young; and Governor of Iowa, where six democrats and two libertarians seek the office currently held by incumbent republican Kim Reynolds.

The deadline for filing for the county primary election is March 28th. The primaries will decide who will be participating in the November general election, so candidates running unopposed in their party will have a more clear path to their goal. The contested races must be won by one candidate receiving at least 35% of the votes in their party’s primary. If no candidate reaches that plateau, the party will select a nominee at their convention. See below for a full list of candidates for the state and federal primary election.
