Perry Bluejays New LogoPerry senior Zach Stewart finished the final match of his high school wrestling career with a state title. Stewart used a 3-1 decision victory to claim the Class 3A 138 Pound title at the IHSAA State Championships in Des Moines.

Stewart entered the tournament with a record of 51-5 after winning the District 8 Tournament in Waukee. In the first round he defeated Johnston’s Sterling Brunk by fall at 44 seconds. He then beat Southeast Polk’s Nathan Marchand by an 8-4 decision in the quarterfinals, advancing to the final four. In the semifinals, Stewart defeated Drevon Ross of Fort Dodge by fall in the final minute of regulation.

Stewart’s opponent in the final was junior Deville Dentis from Des Moines East. He joins Andrew Flora as state champions representing Raccoon Valley Radio area high schools. Listen to Monday’s sports pages for more reaction from the finals at “The Well”.
