A trio of projects at the AC/GC Science Fair.

Over 120 Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center students completed and presented their projects during the school’s inaugural science fair. After considering all the projects, the judges deemed freshman Kylie Young’s “Fueling the Future” project as the best. The judges were impressed by the detail and execution of her project on alternative energy sources. There were also awards distributed for top ten projects and speciality awards, such as “Most Creative Title”, “Best Presentation”, and “Most Practical”.

There were many different reasons why the students picked the projects they did. Sophomore and 4th Place finisher Olivia Laabs wanted to test her parents’ wisdom with her project on caffeine’s effects on athletic performance. “Being an athlete, I just wanted to know how caffeine actually affects your body. My parents were always big on no caffeine, pop, energy drinks. I just wanted to see why they were so keen on that.”

While Laabs was influenced by her parents, Claire Chesnut was looking to prove a point to her friends with her soccer project. “I watched my non-soccer playing classmates kick a soccer ball wrong for years and it has driven me nuts. So I came up with the idea to see if they knew how to properly kick a soccer ball, in the right way, and see if it affected the distance that they kicked the ball.”

The judges selected 29 projects to advance to the regional and state competitions later this year.
