The Greene County varsity basketball teams are idle until Friday, Jan. 12 when they’ll host the Saydel Eagles. That girl/boy doubleheader in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference will mark the start of the second half of the conference schedule. The Greene County girls are 1-6 in the league with the only win coming in Des Moines vs. Saydel, while the Greene County boys are 5-2 in conference games. Overall, the Rams are 4-8 on the girls’ side and 6-3 for the boys.

A look at the first game between the Rams and Eagles shows a tight contest. Greene County won 52-45, but it was a one point game at 46-45 before the Rams scored the last six points of the contest. The teams will enter Friday’s games with nearly identical statistics in some of the major categories. Both teams average exactly 36.6 points per game. Senior Laurin Lyons is Greene County’s top scorer at 11.4 points per game and sophomore Bailey Cunningham is next at 7.3 For the Eagles, senior Katie Schmidt leads the way at 11.2 points and senior Hannah Bowman is next at 7.8.

Friday’s girl/boy doubleheader will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage from the middle school gym in Jefferson starts at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow.
