Jefferson Housing ProjectThe City of Jefferson recently received a grant for homeowner repairs.

The City is partnering with Region XII Council of Governments to do up to six houses in a targeted area of town for homeowners to make repairs. Grant funding is through the Iowa Economic Development Authority. The targeted area is on North West Street from West Lincoln Way to West Adams Street, North Pinet Street from West Adams Street to West Washington Street and North Maple Street from West Washington Street to West Lincoln Way.

Households in that area can apply for grant funds for repairs. Criteria to qualify includes: verification of yearly household income; receiving up to $24,999 per home as a forgivable five-year loan; and items to be included for rehabilitation are lead-based paint reduction, roof or window replacement, siding, electrical or mechanical upgrades, or improvements for handicap accessibility.

City Administrator Mike Palmer talks about how the program has benefited the community in the past.

“It’s one of the ones that have been going on for a long time. It’s made such a difference in the community because it helps people that need some renovations on their house, it encourages them to stay there. It’s just really nice, it’s done so much for this community over the years.”

The Jefferson City Council will pay Region XII no more than $20,000 in administrative fees for the grant application, and Region XII is the supervisor of the project. To apply, contact Region XII Executive Secretary JoAnn Olberding, or Jefferson City Hall by February 5th.
