Greene County RamsThe Greene County High School wrestling program is finally back up and running.

The Ram wrestlers have been out of action since December 16th with a skin viral disease called mat herpes that infected some of the team. Activities Director Mitch Moore told the School Board at their meeting this past Wednesday that he and head coach Mark Sawhill decided to shut-down the wrestling program until all wrestlers were medically cleared to compete. Moore pointed out that he knows the virus didn’t come from any of the Ram wrestlers, but that someone must have picked it up from a wrestler at their last meet on December 16th in Carroll.

Superintendent Tim Christensen explains how he thought the situation was handled overall.

“I felt that Activities Director Mitch Moore, Wrestling Coach Mark Sawhill, (and I) want to give kudos to Dr. Gerdes, they all kind of worked together and really attacked that situation. They did that for a period of time to kind of let that infection run its course so we’re not spreading that around to each other, but especially not to other teams. I think it was handled fantastically.”

The team returned to action on Thursday night when they went 2-1, with victories against West Central Valley and North Polk.
