The Greene County varsity basketball teams are in action tonight on the road in Des Moines at Saydel High School. It’s early in the 2017-18 season, but having both teams above .500 even with so few games played hasn’t been commonplace in recent seasons. The girls have victories over Ogden and Perry, but are 0-1 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play after a 50-34 loss in their most recent game, a home loss to Gilbert on Dec. 1. The Greene County boys are 1-0 overall and in the conference after winning vs. Gilbert by a 65-60 final.

The Saydel teams each have one win, but scoring points has been an issue. The Saydel girls are averaging under 36 points per game and their lone victory was 34-31 over Coon Rapids-Bayard. Paton-Churdan beat the Eagles 46-37, and the other losses are to PCM (Monroe) 56-42 and to Woodward-Granger by a 42-30 final.

The Saydel boys defeated P-C 68-50 to start the season, but points have been tough to come by in their three losses. The Eagles scored a total of 72 points in those three games with 30 vs. CR-B, just seven against PCM, and 35 when they met W-G.

Both games tonight are on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow. The Rams host the PCM teams Friday night in the middle school gym in Jefferson and those games will be broadcast as well.
