Department-of-Veterans-Affairs

While the City of Perry and the Perry School District are observing Veterans Day today, one local business is continuing their annual tradition on the holiday itself.

The Perry Hy-Vee is joining countless other stores in hosting a free breakfast tomorrow morning for military veterans, men and women in active service, and their spouses. Hy-Vee Community Involvement Director Larry Vodenik is a veteran himself and was given the day off tomorrow, but he’s planning to attend and help out, while also reminiscing with his fellow soldiers. “To me being a veteran, and I’ll be out there pouring coffee, it’s so good to see the veterans and the camaraderie and everything. Then when they start telling stories and everything, that part of it is really good for me.”

Store Manager Matt Rohe echoes Vodenik’s sentiments about the camaraderie, and adds that the community is welcome to come and chat with the veterans. “I think it’s my favorite day of the year every year being a store manager at Hy-Vee. You never get the opportunity to see so many veterans in one place, that you get the great opportunity to thank them. And the breakfast is a great gesture. I would encourage anybody, please come out, thank a veteran.”

The meal will be served buffet style from 6-10 a.m., with store employees and volunteers serving drinks.
