intermediate-buildingThe Grand Junction City Council made its decision on what to do with the school building.

Mayor Teresa Lansman tells Raccoon Valley Radio, on Monday, the Council voted unanimously to have the building demolished. The City wants to keep the playground and tennis courts on the property. Lansman says the Council thought that tearing down the building was the best course of action and that was how the majority of citizens that spoke at their special July 31st town hall meeting also felt.

The Greene County School Board gave three options for the building, which included: the School District would demolish the entire building and hand the property over to the City, the School District would demolish part of the building and give the property to the City or give the property to the City as is. The School Board voted to close the building on November 9th, in lieu of needing to save over $330,000 in the general fund, due to declining enrollment from the previous school year.

Lansman notes that she, along with two city council members, two school board members and Greene County Schools Superintendent Tim Christensen will work as a committee to develop the process of how to carry out the City’s wishes. She adds that even though it was a tough decision, she was impressed with how well the situation was handled.
