“You have to beat the best if you want to be the best” is a saying that’s been around athletics a long time. The Greene County baseball team will have its opportunity tonight when the Rams travel to Harlan to meet the Cyclones in a Class 3A District 15 title game. The season ends for the losing team and the winner returns to Harlan on Wednesday night to play in the Substate 8 final with a trip to the State Tournament on the line. The Harlan/Greene County winner will square off in the Substate against a team with a losing record as both Denison-Schleswig (16-20) and Creston (14-19) have lost more game than they’ve won.

Harlan has been to the State tourney each of the last six seasons, including winning it all last year. They are 32-2 this season and ride an 11-game winning streak into tonight’s contest. The Cyclones average 9.2 runs per game while allowing just 2.5 per game, on average.

Greene County clinched a winning season, their second in the last three years, with a 7-4 first round District victory over ADM on Friday. Coach Mark Sawhill’s Rams are 14-12 and have advanced beyond the first round of the postseason for just the second time this decade.

Tonight’s contest will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed “live” on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage starts around 6:30 p.m. with first pitch at 7 o’clock.
