Boone defeated Perry 3-2 Friday night in the opening round of the Class 3A district competition. It was a much better performance by Perry after getting handled by Boone twice during the regular season. A big reason for the turnaround was the pitching of Kyle Nevitt. Despite issuing 6 walks and hitting 3 batters, the senior lefty found a way to escape trouble the entire night. Boone scored their first run on a steal of home by Tanner Schminke. A second run scored on a wild pitch while the eventual game winning run in the 5th crossed the plate following a Bluejay error. Nevitt scattered 4 hits on the night.
Perry jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Nevitt blasted a solo homerun over the right field wall off Boone starter Dresden Wilson. After Boone tied it in the second on the steal of home, Perry regained the lead in the third on a Janier Puente RBI hit. It would be the final run Perry would score off Wilson, who worked the complete game striking out 8.
Boone took the lead on the turning point in the 5th inning. With one out and Schminke at second base, Boone ordered a hit and run. With Schminke already near 3rd base, the ball was hit on a line drive to Alexis Garrido at shortstop. The junior went down to try and catch the ball but it bounced out of his glove at the last second allowing the runner to score. It could have been an inning ending double play.
Perry let an excellent scoring opportunity go by the wayside in the 6th inning. Aaron Lockwood and Justin Stammer reached to start the inning following an error and walk. However, following an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt by Kaleb Olejniczak, Wilson was able to get Nevitt to ground out and Puente to pop out to end the threat.
Perry finishes the season with 7 wins and loses 4 seniors. Puente, Nevitt, Adan Medina and Andrew Pentico have graduated and will move into college next month.
