McCreary Rec Center

With the recent completion of the countywide local option sales tax petition, one organization is very happy to hear about it.

Perry Parks and Recreation Director John Anderson says the McCreary Recreation Center in particular has relied heavily on the tax ever since it’s inception 20 years ago. “If we didn’t have a local option sales tax, that rec center wouldn’t look nearly what it does right now. If we didn’t have that local option sales tax, when stuff broke, we’d be going to the citizens of Perry to raise your taxes to pay for it. You know, those projects are still going to happen regardless, and with local option, at least you’re going to share a bit of that with people travelling through town and spending money as they travel.”

Projects at the rec center which the parks and rec department will use future local option sales tax funds for include: replacing the leaking roof; heating, air conditioning, and ventilation improvements; overhauling the electrical systems; and a new fire alarm system. The local option sales tax in Perry isn’t due to sunset until 2019, but a measure will be on this year’s ballot for the November general election to continue the tax indefinitely. Anderson is hopeful people will keep the rec center in mind when they head to the polls.
