The Hotel Pattee has become a symbol of the revitalization of Perry, as one of the most profitable businesses.

Many in the community give credit for the hotel’s success to Jay and Denise Hartz, who took ownership of the over 100-year-old establishment in 2013. However, their run as the owners of the historic hotel will soon come to an end, as they are attempting to sell it. Citing health issues, the Hartz family has placed Hotel Pattee on the marketplace, with a $2.5 million price tag.

In addition to 40 individual rooms, the hotel also has a bowling alley, restaurant and lounge, spa and fitness center, and meeting and party rooms. The success of the hotel is felt throughout the community, as Perry has the fast-growing income from hotel/motel taxes in the Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau. Last year the hotel had over $2 million in sales.

Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Wilson says the Hartz family has done great work with the hotel, and he ensures the future buyers they will get plenty of aid from the Chamber. “The Chamber fully supports the Hotel Pattee, we totally support the Hartz family. We can’t thank them enough. And you know, it’s not going to happen overnight. And I think (you) can be rest assured that it will be a good transition for everybody in the community.”

The building was originally built in 1913. It underwent a $14 million renovation in the late 1990’s and changed hands several times before being purchased by the Hartz family.
