The Perry Volunteer Fire Department was called to a car fire Sunday afternoon.

The fire department as well as the police department responded to the incident at 1:32 p.m., near the intersection of Willis and Theater avenues. The car was fully engulfed in flames, but firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and no one was injured. Assistant Fire Chief Brian Eiteman spoke with the owner of the 2004 Chrysler, Greg Nath, the former director of the Perry Parks and Recreation Department. Nath said he was on his way back to Perry from Newton, when his vehicle began to overheat. He stopped near Urbandale to fill the radiator with water, discovering it was empty, then continued to Perry.

The vehicle reportedly stalled just outside the City, and Nath attempted to restart it. The car restarted with a popping sound, and shortly after it erupted into flames. Nath was able to exit the car before it became engulfed. Eiteman points out the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but human error is not being ruled out.
