Drowning Prev Week

This week is National Drowning Prevention Week, which focuses on reminding people to boat and swim safely this summer.

Perry Aquatics Coordinator Jimmy Kezar says the first step to drowning prevention is having the proper equipment. “If you’re out on a lake or boating or something, make sure you’re wearing your lifejacket. Don’t just pack it, make sure you have it on. If you do use a lifejacket, make sure it’s one that’s been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.”

Kezar also says it’s always a good idea when swimming to do so in places that have lifeguards. In cases of swimming in lakes or ponds where there are no lifeguards, constant supervision is the key. He advises parents to make sure their children are always within arms-reach while swimming. Additionally he says people should make sure they can touch the bottom in natural bodies of water, because they can have steep drops in depth.

In the event you see someone drowning, Kezar emphasizes it’s not a good idea to jump in to try and save them. Instead, you should attempt to throw or extend something they can grab in order to rescue them. If a person isn’t properly trained for water rescues like lifeguards, there’s a possibility the person attempting the rescue could get pulled under as well.

Additionally, if you find yourself drowning, Kezar says the most important thing is to remain calm and attempt to tread water while calling for help.
