This week is highlighted as National Drowning Prevention Week.

Jefferson Parks and Rec Aquatic Director Simone Lang says to prevent individuals from drowning, never swim alone. He suggests for younger swimmers to use a floatation device or have a parent or guardian around supervising their child. There are always lifeguards on staff at the Jefferson Municipal Pool and Lang notes that if a lifeguard sees someone struggling to swim, they are trained to respond.

“The Red Cross has shown that if treated, of course removed from the water and taken care of within 90-seconds, their chances of complete survival with no issues is very high. Again, we like to get to any victim within 30-seconds and then respond accordingly.”

Lang also reminds people to stay hydrated, wear sunblock and take frequent breaks to prevent fatigue, which can increase the chance for someone to drown.
