1363271341_railroad_tracks414A class on responding to railroad disasters is being held by Guthrie County Emergency Management and requires 20 people to register in order to go on.

The class will be offered at no cost in Stuart on August 12th at the fire station. Rail Car Incident Response is an eight-hour, awareness level course developed to educate rural emergency responders on freight rail car incidents involving hazardous materials.

Because most freight rail traffic crosses rural areas, it is important that rural responders, especially those in resource-limited areas, understand the dangers and unique hazards these incidents present. Although safeguards are in place to prevent hazardous materials from causing harm under normal transportation, storage, handling and use, if any of these safeguards are circumvented, there is potential for great harm.
