In one of the more satisfying victories of the high school softball season, the Greene County Rams were 7-6 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference winners over Saydel (Des Moines) on Wednesday night in Jefferson. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team improved to 3-0 this week and 8-16 overall. They stand at 4-9 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference action while Saydel fell to 6-7 in the conference. The Eagles were 12-0 winners in just three innings when the teams met in Des Moines earlier this season.

Greene County trailed 3-0 and 5-2, but came back to tied the game at 5-5 in the third. Saydel led 6-5 in the fourth, but the Rams tied it at 6-6 in the fifth inning. The Rams needed just two batters to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Megan Durbin led off with a double. Saydel changed pitchers and Jenna Beyers sent a 1-1 delivery whistling down the left field line for her third double of the game, and the Rams had the victory.

Beyers finished four for four at the plate with three doubles, a single, and five runs batted in. Durbin tripled and doubled, and Megan Carey singled and doubled. Hannah Promes added a pair of singles, and Melanie Doran had an infield hit. Promes and Izzy Bravard each drove in a run.

The Rams out hit the Eagles 11-7, and Greene County overcame five errors, while the Eagles had three miscues.

Promes was the winning pitcher. She went all seven innings and allowed three earned runs. Promes walked six batters, hit one with a pitch, and struck out three. Most of the free passes came early in hte game. The Eagles had no runs, no hits and just two base runners in the last three innings combined.
