The Perry Chamber of Commerce has a great deal of confidence in the City, but they face a consistent battle of how to properly market Perry to outsiders.

Chamber Director Bob Wilson recently attended the Economic Development Conference in Des Moines, and it was there he got an idea that he believes could be the key to putting Perry on the tourism radar.

“The downtown cultural district is thriving, and I think there’s more things going on and more positive feelings down there than there has been in a long time. And what we’re trying to do is capture that and tell our story better. So it’s really easy to sell Perry when you get somebody downtown, and they see these things. But how do we attract more people? How do we get them here to then go into the stores and the restaurants and whatnot? One major piece we’re working on right now and we’re going to roll it out this summer is a simple concept: a map.”

The map would have information about all the businesses in the City, including their hours. Wilson feels that’s important, because he believes people don’t usually have an issue with stores being closed, as long as they knew about it beforehand. The maps will be placed at the welcome depots, all the participating stores, and convention and visitors bureau locations. Wilson says they’ll enlist the services of a local artist or two to design the map, and he hopes to have it ready to roll out by this summer.
