Guthrie and Adair Emergency Manager Bob Kempf tells Raccoon Valley Radio he hopes to build a base of volunteers who can be ready to coordinate a response in the case of a local disaster. Kempf says it is important to have a structure in place when disaster strikes to speed up the recovery effort.

“Say we have a tornado in Adair, knock on wood it doesn’t happen, but if it does, this way we will have a group of people from all the towns around who can come and coordinate all the volunteers that come in while our law enforcement and rescue services are busy and don’t have time for that.”

A class on volunteer management is scheduled for June 10 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Stuart Fire Station. Sign-ups are open now, and a minimum of 15 people is needed to hold the class. Kempf hopes some people who attend the class will help him to create a policy and procedure manual for setting up volunteer reception areas in Adair and Guthrie counties.
