Greene County High School starts the outdoor track & field season on March 27 in Jefferson at Linduska Field with the Rams’ Early Bird Coed meet starting at 4:30 p.m. At Tuesday’s Media Day, girls’ head coach Kelly Simpson talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about the keys to the season. “I think the big thing is, we’ve got some nice individual runners. Can we put some relays together, and find that fourth person in the relays that’s going to make us dynamic instead of just competitive? That’s something we’re going to take a look at. And, it’s nice to have a shuttle (hurdle relay) back this year. We’ve got six hurdlers, and they may be a little young, and have a big tradition with big shoes to fill in that event, but it’s just nice to have it back this year.”

Greene County, Jefferson, and Jefferson-Scranton have qualified for State 25 times in the shuttle hurdle relay since 1983, and most of those have taken place under Simpson’s tutelage.

This is the last season at the helm for the longtime coach, as he’s taken out early retirement papers from his positions as a Greene County HS teacher and coach. Simpson is also the girls and boys cross-country coach for the Rams.
