Earlier this week, ACGC head wrestling coach Shawn Danker and the Charger wrestling team officially put an end to the 2016-17 campaign with their season ending awards night banquet.
In the first year under the ACGC name, the Charger wrestling squad had a more than solid season totaling 249 wins and 154 losses. ACGC had a solid 10-14 dual meet record throughout the season which was capped off by sending two wrestlers to the state meet. The Chargers had 99 victories by fall, 14 victories by technical fall, 11 major decision wins, 13 wins by decision, and 4 sudden victory wins.
There were 13 letter winners in all for the Chargers headlined by Zach Fees, Logan Schueremann, and Cade Suhr all becoming three year letter winners. Diving into the awards, sophomore Gabe Rowley took home the Most Improved Wrestler award coming in the top five of 8 statistical categories. Of those eight, Rowley took the team lead in 2 point nearfalls with 16 and escapes with 26.
Fellow sophomore Easton Benson earned the Coaches Award coming in the top five on the team in seven statistical categories while Ben Kingery took home the Roger Fett Courage Award.
The Most Valuable Wrestler Award was bestowed upon a very deserving recipient in two time state qualifier Logan Scheuermann. The senior led the Chargers in seven different categories including wins with 43, technical falls with 11, takedowns with 77, three point near falls with 45, reversals with 16, match points with 384, and ending it off with the team lead in team points with 248.
Scheuermann joined fellow seniors Cole Stetzel and Cade Suhr as recipients for the Captain Awards.
