Postseason surrounds West Central Valley athletics today which includes the likes of Wildcat wrestling and the Wildcat boys basketball team.

On the mats, the Wildcat wrestling team will witness two of their own make their first trips to the big dance at the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines. West Central Valley’s lone returning state qualifier from last year in Tye Joint was unable to move on but in his place is the duo of Quest Brown (113 lbs) and Riley Algreen (182 lbs). Brown at 33-12, will start off his podium pursuit with perhaps his toughest test of the tournament against class 1A’s top ranked 113 lb wrestler Cael Happel of Lisbon who yields just three losses on the year.

Riley Algreen will search for a podium finish starting off against a tough test himself taking on the third ranked 182 lb wrestler in class 1A which would be Maquoketa Valley’s senior phenom Alec McDowell. Algreen enters the state tournament with a record of 30-13 while McDowell enters with a record of 45-2. Brown and Algreen will commence with the state tournament along with the rest of class 1A beginning at 1:30 pm this afternoon.

On top of all the wrestling action, the Wildcat boys basketball team will also take on postseason action as they commence with round two. Tonight they will be traveling to Carroll to square off against the likes of 2nd ranked Kuemper-Catholic high school. West Central Valley will have a tough task battling against a Knights squad currently residing inside the top 7 or better in class 2A in field goal shooting, three point shooting, and points per game with just under 73 per contest. The big focus defensively for the Wildcats will be defending the three headed scoring monster in Sam Auen, Parker Badding, and Matt Dentlinger notching 10.5 pts, 10.9 pts, and 19.0 points respectively. The game in Carroll tonight tips off at 8:00 pm.
