Perry junior Zachary Thompson finished in third place in Class 2A at 120 lbs. on Saturday afternoon at the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament. Thompson went 2-0 on Saturday to finish the season with a 52-6 record. He won 6-2 over Nick Meling of EM/GMG in the consolation semifinals, then topped Shea Ruffridge of Pocohantas Area/Laurens-Marathon for third by a score of 3-1.

Kaleb Olejniczak of Perry was fourth at 113 lbs. He finished the season 54-6 after winning 6-3 in the consolation semifinal over vs. Chase Luensman of Monticello, then dropped a 14-2 major decision vs. Eric Faught of Clear Lake in the third place match.

Also in 2A, Andrew Flora of ADM was fourth at 106 lbs. He won 5-1 over Brock Beck of Grinnell in the consolation semifinal before losing the third place match 5-3 to Will Esmoil of West Liberty. Flora, a sophomore, went 48-7 this season.

Tanner Vermaas of Woodward-Granger was sixth at 182 lbs. after two losses Saturday dropped his season record to 48-5. Vermaas lost by 18-2 technical fall to Boone McDermott of Wahlert Catholic (Dubuque) in this first match of the day, then lost 6-4 to Nick Foss of Harlan in the fifth place match.

Bryce Hatten of Winterset was eighth at 106 lbs. after falling to Jack Thomsen of Union (La Porte City) 11-7 in his only match of the day.

In 1A, four area wrestlers were in action. Logan Scheuermann of ACGC was eighth at 145 lbs. He lost his only Saturday match to Chance Downs of Maquoketa Valley (Delhi) 6-0 to finish 43-8 this season.

Panorama had three State place winners in George Appleseth (132), Tyler Van Houten (152), and Gunnar Grunsted (170). Gruntsted was 1-1 on the day and finished in fifth place. He lost by :28 fall in the consolation semifinals to Trent Kruger of Sibley-Ocheyden, but ended his season at 45-12 with a 3-1 sudden victory in overtime vs. Bryce Werderman of Lisbon. Appleseth lost twice and placed sixth with a final season record of 44-11. He fell to Cooper Siebrecht of Lisbon 9-2, then dropped a 16-5 major decision in the fifth place match to Joshua Tibbits of Martensdale-St. Mary’s. Van Houten had just one match Saturday, a 5-3 victory for seventh place over Sawyer Philliips of Pleasantville, and Van Houten completed his season at 53 wins and just five losses.

The only area wrestler to reach the finals is W-G freshman Cody Fisher at 195 lbs. in 2A. Fisher meets West Liberty junior Bryce Esmoil in tonight’s finals in a match that can be heard on all three Raccoon Valley Radio Network stations, and also via streaming on www.raccoonvalleyradiocom.
