The 16 area wrestlers in Class 2A from the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area went a combined 6-10 in the first round tonight at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Four of the first round losers won their first consolation round matches, so 10 of the 16 are still in the tournament.

Perry won two of three in the first round with a 9-3 decision at 113 from fourth ranked sophomore Kaleb Olejniczak over Ian Showers of BCL-UW/South Hardin. Next up for the 51-4 sophomore from Perry in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon will be number three Aden Reeves of Albia.

Zachary Thompson of Perry won by fall in 1:19 vs. Cresten Craven of Humboldt. Ranked sixth, Thompson is 49-5 and meets Sinjin Briggs of Gilbert in the quarterfinals.

Zach Stewart of Perry lost 3-2 in round one to Ryan Steffen of Crestwood (Cresco). The junior is 47-9 and he wrestled in the first consolation round vs. Carson Hartnett of Webster City and Stewart won 7-4 to stay alive on the consolation side.

ADM went 2-0 in the opening round with a 3-0 win by Andrew Flora at 106 over Winterset’s Bryce Hatten. The sophomore is 47-5 and ranked seventh and will meet Jack Thomsen of Union (La Porte City) in Friday’s quarterfinal. Nolan Harsh overcame a 7-2 deficit to win 13-7 over Mitch Van Beek of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock. Harsh is 35-8 and fifth rated Skyler Noftsger of Ballard in the quarterfinals.

Winterset went 1-4 in the opening round with senior Justin Smith, ranked sixth at 145, the lone winner. Smith topped Dylan Koresh of Charles City 6-2. Bryce Hatten (106) lost 3-0 in the first round to Andrew Flora of ADM, then won 6-4 in the consolation first round over Jack Stretcher of Mount Vernon to advance to Friday’s second consolation round. Jack West (120) lost b;y fall twice and he ends the season 27-11. West was pinned in round one by Bryce West of Solon in 1:52, then lost by fall in 3:16 to Kyler Dunn of Spirit Lake Park. Blake Ryerson (138) lost by fall in 52 seconds to top ranked Keaton Geerts of New Hampton, followed by an 8-3 loss to Jake Recker of Beckman (Dyersville). Bradley Tolley (285) lost by fall in 4:45 to Colin Anderson of Ballard (Huxley) after leading 7-1. Tolley lost in the consolation round 12-3 to Blake Bradley of Wahlert (Dubuque).

Woodward-Granger had three qualifiers in Austin Scharlau (152), Tanner Vermaas (182), and Cody Fisher (195). Scharlau lost twice and his tournament is over It was a first round  13-0 major decision loss to Trey Van Weelden of Washington in round one, followed by a loss to Logan Koedam of MOC-Floyd Valley. Scharlau ends the season at 40-18. Second ranked Vermaas lost 4-1 to South Tama County’s Dalton Rosenburg to fall to 45-3. He improved to 46-3 with a fall in 2:15 in his consolation match over Austin Angle of Eddyvile-Blakesburg-Fremont. Fisher won by fall in his only match of the night in 2:47 over Christian Harder of Gilbert. He’ll take on Jackson Mikkelson of Creston/Orient-Macksburg in the quarterfinals.

Van Meter/Earlham has Colby Wiederholt (106) and Caleb Button (152.) Both went 0-2 and have been eliminated from further action. Wiederholt lost 7-5 to Brock Beck of Grinnell, then fell by 13-2 major decision to Will Esmoil of West Libert. Button lost his first match to Kade Kelso of Central Decatur (Leon) 17-0, then lost by fall 1:52 to Cody Feldman of Beckman.

Greene County qualified Hunter Ruth (220) and he lost 6-2 in the closing seconds  of his match with Nick Smith of Central De Witt after it was tied 2-2. Smith secured a takedown and two point near fall in the last six seconds as Ruth fell to 30-4 and dropped into the consolation round. The Ram is now 31-5 after he won by fall in 1:19 over Kyle Kucera of South Tama County in the consolation round.
