Old rivals Perry and Greene County went down to the wire on Tuesday night on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com at the Perry Pavillion with the Blue Jays winning the non-conference boys’ basketball game on a last second three-pointer by junior Drew Levan. It was it second basket of the game and his only points of the second half. Levan finished with six points and his game-winner set off a wild celebration by the Perry players. The Blue Jays stopped a three-game losing streak and improved to 11-9.

Greene County lost for just the second time in eight games overall and for just the second time in 10 games away from Jefferson. The loss occurred despite 43 points from senior Trey Tucker. The points gave the standout exactly 1,800 for his career and 527 this season, and he tied the all-time single game scoring record for a Jefferson-based boys’ basketball program. He upped his Class 3A leading scoring average to 25.09 per game. Tucker’s baseline layup tied the game with eight seconds remaining, but Perry called timeout and set up Levan’s heroics.

The Rams led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter and were up 31-30 at halftime. Perry senior Janier Puente scored 16 of his team best 21 points in the third quarter leading the Blue Jays to a 49-41 lead late in the stanza, and Perry was up 50-46 when the third period ended. There were six ties in the fourth quarter and the margin was never greater than four points down the stretch.

Perry made 24 of 45 shots from the floor for 53% and they were three of 10 on three-point attempts. The Blue Jays were 15 of 29 from the foul line including three of 11 in the last quarter, and they turned the ball over 11 times, six in the last stanza.

Greene County had just four turnovers for the game. The Rams made 23 of 57 shots from the field including six of 18 from beyond the arc. The Rams were 10 of 14 shooting free throws. Tucker was 15 of 33 from the floor and nine of 11 from the charity stripe. He went four of nine on three-point shots.

The regular season is over for the Rams at 14-7. Up next is a 3A district tournament game on Monday, Feb. 20 at Dallas Center-Grimes High School west of Grimes vs. the home team, DC-G Mustangs.
