Grand JunctionThe Mayor of Grand Junction has resigned.

City Clerk Katherine Thomas says she received a text from Mayor Dave Kersey this past Sunday saying as of midnight, he resigned as mayor. The text goes on to say “Thank you for all your help.” Thomas then followed up with the League of Cities to confirm that a resignation can be official via text and she was told it was. She adds that Kersey didn’t provide a reason for his resignation.

Mayor Pro-Tem Teresa Lansman tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she was shocked when she found out on Monday that Kersey had resigned. She says Kersey started a few projects that were going to help improve the overall look of the City. She was able to confirm with Kersey about his resignation, but hasn’t had a conversation with him since.

A special public meeting will be held tonight at 6pm for the City Council to acknowledge Kersey’s resignation and decided whether or not to appoint an individual to fill the position or have a special election. Thomas points out that the Council has 60 days to appoint someone or 90 days to have a special election. Kersey’s term as mayor ends this December and would be up for re-election in November.

Kersey remains employed as a deputy with the Greene County Sheriff’s office. Raccoon Valley Radio tried to reach out to Kersey, but he hasn’t returned a phone call for comment.
