The basketball season is over for the Greene County girls and the regular season ends tomorrow night for the Greene County boys.

Coach Dean Lyons’ girls’ team lost to Kuemper Catholic in Carroll on Saturday night at Kuemper High School in a Class 3A Region 3 opening round contest by a 67-26 final. The Knights led 16-0 at the start and 43-17 at halftime. The 35-point rule continuous clock went into effect early in the fourth quarter. Kuemper was red-hot shooting the ball from long range, making 11 of 22 three-point shots. They were at 57% overall from the floor and 12 of 16 from the free throw line. A team void of seniors, Kuemper was led on Saturday night by 15 points from junior Kalee Peter, 14 for sophomore Brooklyn Bakke, , 12 from sophomore Maci Overmohle, and 10 from sophomore Aimee Adams. The Knights had 11 turnovers as they improved to 13-8 on the season.

Greene County ended its season with a 4-18 record. Junior Laurin Lyons scored eight points and senior Hannah Promes added six. It was the final basketball game as Rams for Promes and senior Taylor Wessling. Senior Kenna Marquardt missed her fifth straight game due to a knee injury. The Rams were nine of 15 from the foul line and eight of 34 from the floor with Lyons accounting for half the field goals. The Rams had 18 turnovers.

The Greene County boys are 14-6 and they finished second in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference at 13-3 after a 70-65 road win in Monroe over PCM last Friday. The last regular season game for Coach Chris Nelson’s team is tomorrow night in Perry against a streaky Blue Jays team that has lost its last three after winning its previous five games. Overall, Perry is 10-9 and they finished 7-7 in the Raccoon River Activities Conference.
